Fifth graders are learning to code using the coursework from Code.org. These courses include both online programming and "unplugged" activities which help students better understand the underlying concepts of coding.
In the photos below, 5th graders are learning to pair program - which requires great cooperation and listening skills. In pair programming, one student is the "navigator" and one is the "driver." Students must work together to solve the online puzzles. Both roles are equally important, and students switch roles often to become adept at both responsibilities. Also, included in the slideshow are pictures of the 5th graders doing an "unplugged" activity called, "Move It, Move It." In this lesson the students learn that in order to give clear instructions, they need a common language. Students practiced controlling one another using a simple combination of arm signals. Once they understand the language, they will begin to "program" one another by giving multiple instructions in advance. As you will see, they thoroughly enjoyed relating alogorithms as programs to their classmates. |
Students can continue coding at home!
