First Graders Learn About Coding!
First graders participated in a few different "unplugged" activities as an introduction to coding in the Media Center this week.
First Graders learn to code!!
The first graders have begun coding through the coursework in code.org. There are 18 lessons in Course 1, and at the end of the course they earn a Certificate of Completion for Course 1.
Some students have asked for the link to do their coding at home. The link for 1st grade is: https://studio.code.org/sections/MCYSKF. Of course they will need to log in with their name and password, which they have all been given.
If your child chooses to do coding at home, please make sure that they are doing their own work. It is such a fun website that often older siblings like to do the activities, which will hinder the users progress when they have to go it alone. They can, however, do any activity in the Play Lab together!

First graders have enjoyed playing on the website called Teach Your Monster to Read. The children work with their "monster" through 3 games, each game taking them through a series of practice sessions. The first game reviews letter sounds and recognition, practicing letter-sound combinations, blending and segmenting, and non-decodable "tricky" words. The second game is for children who are confident with early letter-sound combinations and are starting to read sentences. The third game is for Champion Readers, children who are confidently reading and know all of the basic letter-sound combinations. The earn items as they go along in the game, and even win free e-books that they can read online.
