Fourth graders learn to code!
Fourth graders are learning to code using the coursework from Code.org. These courses include both online programming and "unplugged" activities which help students better understand the underlying concepts of coding.
In the photos below, 4th graders are practicing communicating ideas through codes and symbols by "programming" one another to draw maps. Through this activity students are beginning to understand what programming is really about. The students took turns instructing each other to color squares on a grid in an effort to reproduce an existing map. Some students even created their own maps. In the pictures below, 4th graders are also shown doing an "unplugged" activity called, "Move It, Move It." In this lesson the students learned that in order to give clear instructions, they need a common language. Students practiced controlling one another using a simple combination of arm signals. Once they understood the language, they began to "program" one another by giving multiple instructions in advance. As you will see, they thoroughly enjoyed relating alogorithms as programs to their classmates. |
