.This past week students were invited into Graebner's I.M.A.G.E.S. program. I.M.A.G.E.S. is part of the Utica Community School Academically Talented and Gifted program. The acronym stands for Inquiring Minds At Graebner Elementary School.
Students qualify for I.M.A.G.E.S. based on a 6-part rubric. Included in the rubric are the academic scores from NWEA math, reading, science and social studies results.
I taught I.M.A.G.E.S. many years ago, found that I really missed the challenges and creativity of this group, so I decided to return to coaching once again.
We will do many different things this year in I.M.A.G.E.S.; however, nothing is set in stone until I get feedback from our students.
I am really looking forward to working with this year's students.
Today I talked with our I.M.A.G.E.S. students about the value of truly listening to others, and shared with them a few of my favorite quotes. I noticed from the very first meeting that they are so excited to share their thinking (which I encourage), but wanted them to know that the path to learning lies in listening as well. Ask them about it, and see what stuck with them about that mini-lesson:-)
This afternoon our students had time to explore some of the things we will be working on this year. We started off the year with: Dash & Dot robots, Sphero/Spark, Lego/Mindstorms EV3, Snap Circuits, Hex Bug Robotics, and Arduino Coding kits. We will eventually add in a few other stations, but for now they are entirely engaged and loving it! They worked very hard problem-solving and collaborating to overcome obstacles.
I realized that we are going to have to do some sort of a fundraiser to purchase batteries (I went through 2 packs just today!) and accessories for a few of our kits. I would also like to get our team t-shirts. More information to come shortly regarding this.
